Black Fashion Fair at the Brooklyn Museum

Written by:

This past Saturday night, Black Fashion Fair took over the first floor of the Brooklyn Museum in a divine display of Black joy and artistic dexterity, all while paying homage to Black fashion’s past, present, and impending future. Guests – designers, editors, models, stylists, and everyday fashion lovers alike – all came in distinctly NYC casual fits to mingle, dance, uplift Black-owned brands, and experience a love only true community can elicit.

The event was hosted by the founders of the legendary streetwear brand FUBU. When talking about the highly influential hip-hop style of the 90s, For Us By Us is always a part of the conversation. Black Fashion Fair is no stranger to honoring hip-hop’s influence on Black fashion, but this collaboration was a very exciting surprise. Being an NYC-founded organization themselves, Black Fashion Fair only saw it fit to work alongside such a pivotal brand for the occasion.

Black designer pieces were available for purchase at the event’s curated pop-up shop. Pieces from Theophilio, Homage Year, and more were available alongside the official event t-shirt. The tour merchandise – made in collaboration with FUBU – immortalizing the event is currently available for purchase on the Black Fashion Fair website. With FUBU bold across the back, the event’s date and location, and 2 font colorways, this tour t-shirt is surely a slice of Black fashion history. And folks who weren’t running on CP time got themselves an exclusive tour wristband.

The DJs played tracks from Beyonce’s Renaissance, hits from New York’s very own D.M.X., dance floor incinerators from Fatman Scoop and many more Black party classics. With such beauty, joy, and raw talent flowing through the air, guests couldn’t help but to bust a quick whine, throw up gun fingers, or get down right dirty in the middle of a dance circle. The sounds came courtesy of DJ MORESOUPPLEASE, Dj Wavy Fox, and Quiana Parks.

The drinks were flowing, and the vibes were high all night. Many guests stopped to take pictures on the rolled-out red carpet, served face with their friends in the photo booth, and viewed Virgil Abloh’s “Figures of Speech” exhibition, which is currently on display at the Brooklyn Museum. Access to the exhibit is a perk that came with the purchase of a ticket to the Black Fashion Fair event. The fashion pioneer was a supporter of Black Fashion Fair and lives on through his extradionary legacy and incredible impact on high fashion, streetwear, and burgeoning designers.

The night at the Brooklyn Museum was the first stop on Black Fashion Fair’s Museum World Tour. Ever-tight-lipped, they have not released an official tour list with future dates and locations. Still, many eyes (including mine) are remaining vigilant for the organization’s next announcement as events celebrating Black creativity are few and far between. Antoine Grégory, Black Fashion Fair’s founder and editorial director, spoke to Okayplayer about this disparity, “Today we don’t always feel comfortable in these spaces. With Museum World Tour we’re giving people the chance to enjoy [museums] with community.”
