Informed predictions or wishful thinking?
Either way, let’s get into what I imagine 2023 will bring us in the bountiful fashion and style sector.
Sneaker Culture Will Turn On Its Head
I heard in passing that you can’t just walk into Footlocker and get newly released sneakers anymore. Doesn’t that seem wrong to y’all? The discussions about folks who did not grow up within sneaker culture coming in and basically monopolizing the niche industry through reselling — and effectively shutting out the very people who popularized that style of footwear — have been disheartening.
I believe that greed and fashion pseudo-status symbols will lose their stronghold in 2023. I have respect for sneakerheads, so I hope this means that the gear you love becomes accessible once again!
Colors Will Prevail
Minimalism reigns supreme in home decor, and our world is steadily becoming greyer. So this prediction is a bold one. Even within fashion, what I refer to as post-apocalyptic or dystopian fashion has been domineering online culture since 2020. I have yet to see this aesthetic explore color palettes outside whites, beiges, grays, and blacks. Maybe they’ve snuck a navy blue in there once or twice. Who knows?
But, I see a kaleidoscope of colored looks blooming onto the cutting edge of fashion and maintaining its hold. This year feels particularly hopeful, and our world should reflect that brightness.

Marsai Martin Becomes a Fashion Girl Officially
I see it for this young woman. In collaboration with her stylist Bryon Javar — whose clientele includes Saweetie, Cardi B, Winnie Harlow, and Chloe Bailey — Marsai Martin has been killing it on and off screen. Her stand-out look at the fashion dud that was the 2022 BET Awards really woke me up, and I’ve been in love with the image the duo has created for Marsai ever since! Listen.
But this prediction begs the question: how exactly is a fashion girl crowned? This a blog post topic for another day.
Upcycling Will be More Common
One of the most sustainable practices is looking through your closet and seeing what you can update, mend, or personalize. Soon enough, people will realize that their buying habits are… well, for lack of a better term, absolute shit. This realization will prompt folks to become more resourceful. People will spend more time constructing outfits by repurposing what they already own, even if it’s as simple as wearing their skirts as tops. Personally, I’m getting a bedazzler and jazzing up my denim jackets!
Really, 2023 is the year in which we’re concerned with ourselves. More people will prioritize what makes them feel good, what’s most comfortable, and what reflects their genuine character. Style is personal. Spend this year learning how to better express yourself through your fashion choices.
